There’s a lot of rumble lately about how healthy tart cherries, tart cherry juice and tart cherry extract can be. It’s been shown to help with the pain of gout as well as prevent the condition completely. In addition, tart cherries help with arthritis, inflammation, and insomnia. Chances are, the last time you had a piece of cherry pie or a cherry tart, you didn’t know that you were actually doing something good for your body. That’s why there are various recipes around that include tart cherries in some form that are not only tasty but beneficial to your health. Now you can make both your body and taste buds happy when you try some of the following tart cherry recipes.

Cherry Tarts

Cherry Tarts4 Cups of red tart cherries, unsweetened
1 Cup of cherry juice, unsweetened
4 Cups of red tart cherries, unsweetened
1 Cup of cherry juice, unsweetened
3 Tablespoons of orange juice
1 Tablespoon of lemon juice
1 Teaspoon grated orange rind
¾ Cup of sugar
2 Teaspoons of cornstarch
½ Teaspoon of salt
2 Tablespoons of butter
9 Tart shells

Start with assembling all ingredients of this cherry tart recipe. Mix the sugar, salt, cornstarch, and fruit juices together in a saucepan. Cook for 5 minutes over direct heat or until the mixture is thick and clear. Remove from the heat and add the butter, orange rind and cherries. Let cool. Pour into the tart shells. These can be served with whipped cream, ice cream or simply as is. This Cherry Tarts recipe makes nine servings.

Cherry Banana Bread

1 Cup of tart cherries, drained, pitted and cut up
1 ½ Cups bananas, mashed
¾ Cup of sugar
½ Stick of margarine
2 Cups of flour
½ Teaspoon of salt
2 Teaspoons of baking soda
2 Eggs

Assemble all ingredients of the cherry banana bread recipe. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream the margarine and the sugar. Add the bananas, cherries, and eggs. Mix all dry ingredients together and add to the fruit mixture. Grease 2 9” x 4” bread pans. Pour in the mixture and bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted. This is great with breakfast or as a dessert.

Cherry Pie Filling

Cherry Pie4 Cups of tart cherries, pitted
3 to 4 Tablespoons of cornstarch
¾ to 1 Cup of cherry juice
1 Cup of sugar
½ Teaspoon Almond extract (optional)

Assemble all ingredients of this cherry pie filling recipe. If using frozen cherries, heat them in a saucepan until the juice flows indicating that the cherries are thawing. Drain the juice before the cherries get warm. If using sweet cherries, reduce the sugar to taste. Stir the cornstarch and sugar together. Add just enough juice to create a paste. Then add the rest of the juice. Stirring continuously, cook over low heat until the sauce thickens. Add the drained cherries and almond extract, if desired. Cool.

To make the pie: Pour the pie filling into a pie crust. Top with another crust. Bake at 425 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes or until the pie is brown and bubbling..

Cherry Smoothies

Everyone loves smoothies these days. You hear all about strawberry, banana, pineapple, strawberry-banana, mango, orange, and various other smoothies. Any fruit can be made into a smoothie. In fact, apparently certain vegetables can be added and turned into smoothies as well. So it should come as no surprise that there are ways to turn tart cherries into tasty smoothies. Whether you use them as a quick breakfast or a pick me up snack, these recipes can fit the bill!

Red Tart Cherry Smoothie

14 Cups of tart cherry juice concentrate
12 Cups of orange juice
1 Ripe banana, peeled and sliced
1 Cup of plain yogurt
1 Cup of crushed ice

Put all of the ingredients into a blender or a food processor. Then blend until the mixture is smooth. If your blender has a smoothie setting, you can use that. If it’s a bit too tart, add some honey to taste. This recipe makes eight servings and takes about 3 minutes total to prepare.

Cherry Mango Smoothie

1 Cup of unsweetened, frozen tart cherries
1 Cup of mango, frozen or fresh
1 Cups of skim milk

Assemble the ingredients in your blender. Puree the cherries, mango and milk until smooth. If your blender has a smoothie setting, use that. Enjoy immediately. This recipe makes one serving.

Cherry Smoothie

2 Cups of tart cherries, frozen
1 Ripe banana, peeled
1 Cup of cherry juice blend

Place all ingredients of this cherry smoothie recipe into a blender. Puree, or use smoothie setting on your blender, until the ingredients are smooth. Enjoy immediately. It takes about 5 minutes to prepare four servings.
